The university used to be associated with the United States-based Laureate International Universities network. However, in 2019, UPES formed an academic partnership with the Global University System, which is a Dutch education network. This collaboration started with the signing of a memorandum of understanding and later led to UPES becoming a full member of the Global University System. The partnership focuses on cooperation in education, training, and research.
Since its establishment in 2003, UPES has grown and now has two campuses called Energy Acres and Knowledge Acres, located in Bidholi and Kandoli in the Dehradun district. The main office is situated in New Delhi.

At the Ug level University offers four – five year BE/BTech, three to four year BSc, BBA, BCom, BA, and three-year LLB and BCA courses to students.
